The River, Resort on the Mekong river at Champasak, Lao (2009)This new Eco-tourism resort in unspoiled countryside in the south of Lao is going to be an unashamed "modern-style" ensemble of buildings with it’s circular open "sala" with reception, lobby, restaurant, infinity-edge pool + pool deck projecting out on the natural promontory of the site with a 240 degree river view overlooking huge bolders in the river during the dry season when the water level of the Mekong is about 10 meters lower than at the end of the rainy season. No "Thai-style", "Balinese" or local vernacular cottages like most of the other existing small hotels and guest houses. The hotel room buildings are small two storey buildings, each with 4 rooms, natural cross ventilation and metal-deck roofs collecting the rain water. The very large site with 300 meters of river frontage enables all buildings to be located on the edge of the river bank with large terraces and fantastic views eastwards over the Mekong river but also westwards with smaller balconies toward the mountain range with Wat Phou, a World Heritage Site Khmer temple nearby. The majority of the land behind the resort buildings will be rice fields with a access bridge over and across these, linking the entry sala at the roadside with the circular main sala, orchards and vegetable gardens providing organic food for the resorts restaurant. |
